Basic Combined Military Training for Students: What Does It Mean and What to Prepare for?

Starting in September 2025, a new mandatory subject will appear for students of Ukrainian higher education institutions - basic military training (BZVP). This decision has already sparked lively discussions among young people, educators, lawyers, and society in general. Why is such an initiative being introduced now? What consequences will it have? Will it affect the mobilization of students? And most importantly, what real prospects does this training open up? Today, we will analyze all the details of this innovation, its pros and cons, and also provide answers to the most common questions.

Reasons and prerequisites for the introduction of BZVP
Recent events in Ukraine are forcing the state to change its approaches to defense policy. The military threat from the aggressor, the experience of mobilization, and the need for citizens to be prepared for possible challenges dictate new conditions. In this regard, the government has developed the concept of BZVP, which has two key goals:

Formation of basic military skills in young people. Even if a person does not plan to serve in the army, he must have basic knowledge of handling weapons, tactics, self-defense, first aid and navigation in combat conditions.
Strengthening the country's defense capabilities. Ukraine seeks to create a society where every citizen understands his actions in case of danger, can respond to emergencies in an organized manner and, if necessary, join the defense forces.
This practice is not new in the world. It exists in countries such as Finland, Poland, and the Baltic countries. There, young people receive military training from an early age, which forms a responsible attitude towards the defense of the state in citizens.

What is BZVP?
The BZVP program is designed taking into account modern needs and should consist of two main parts:

Theoretical course (90 academic hours) - students will study military disciplines directly in educational institutions. This part will include such topics as military tactics, international humanitarian law, military ethics, the basics of survival in combat conditions and psychological training.

Practical course (210 academic hours) - involves training in specialized military centers, where students will receive practical skills in weapons handling, tactical training, terrain orientation and providing first aid.

Is BZVP forced mobilization?
One of the most common questions is: does passing BZVP mean automatic enlistment in the army? No, it is not mobilization. The law clearly regulates that students are not subject to mobilization until they are 25 years old. At the same time, young men and women who have reached the age of 18 can voluntarily enter contract service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine if they express such a desire.

Who will undergo BZVP?
The theoretical part must be completed by all students, regardless of gender.
The practical course is mandatory for men who are recognized as fit for military service.
Women can undergo practice voluntarily, provided they are registered with the Military Service Center.
If a student who is required to undergo the practical part refuses, this may be grounds for expulsion from the educational institution.

What does BZVP provide for students?
Basic combined military training not only disciplines, but also provides a number of specific advantages:

Military registration specialty - after graduation, students will take the oath and receive a military ID and certificate
Career opportunities - for employment in state bodies, local government bodies or the prosecutor's office, BZVP will become a mandatory requirement.
Vital skills - the ability to provide first aid, survive in extreme conditions, act in crisis situations are useful even in peaceful life.

What equipment and methods will be used?
For practical classes, students will work with standard weapons of the Armed Forces of Ukraine: assault rifles, machine guns, grenade launchers. Training modules on interaction with military equipment, which will be available in training centers, are also provided.

Before the start of practical classes, students will undergo a medical examination. Persons who cannot participate in military training due to health conditions will be exempted from undergoing practical training.

Thus, basic military training is not just another reform, but a strategic step aimed at forming a responsible civil society. This decision has both advantages and raises many questions. However, it is worth understanding that in modern conditions, every citizen must be ready to defend the state and his life.
